Are you in a hurry to reach weaning milestones with your baby? Taking it slow can be the key to a stress-free and enjoyable experience introducing solids!
Why Rush? The Weaning Learning Curve
Introducing solids to my babies taught me a valuable lesson – it’s a process that can’t be rushed! Each child has their unique pace when it comes to mastering the intricacies of eating solid foods. From discovering their mouths to wielding a fork, the journey unfolds at different speeds and times for each child.

Rather than attaching specific dates or ages to these milestones, I learnt the beauty of letting my children learn at their own pace. After all, their brains are actively absorbing a life skill, and that, in itself, is worth so much. This is a period of slow transition from milk to solids – not a race!
Individual Progress
One of my children was wolfing down food effortlessly from the word go, while the other took her time – a good few weeks, at least. The move to drinking from a cup varied between them, as did their preferences for certain foods and their use of cutlery. The truth is, there’s no universal age at which a child “should” be achieving specific weaning milestones – it’s all about readiness and the opportunity to try.
Avoid the pressure of comparing your little one to others. Don’t fret if they seem to take longer to adapt. Questions like “At what age should my little one be…” often lack a definitive answer – which I know we all hate as parents! It’s just like all the other stages of development, they don’t happen at the same time for every baby.
Taking a Step Back
Imagine a few years from now – will your child be attending school while still on purée at five? Unlikely – especially if you follow my advice for progression through the textures (more on how I can help here). Allow your baby to explore this exciting phase of life at their own pace and resist the urge to compare their progress to others. But, absolutely do reach out if you’re concerned. This is the perfect time to identify any issues that might be holding your baby back from the enjoyment of food.
Relax, watch, and let them enjoy the experience of acquiring new skills. Think of each mealtime as a moment to smile, an experience of exploration and every camera-worthy moment as a reason to laugh. Don’t stress about how things should be; instead, go with the flow. Your little one will reach milestones when they’re ready, and the journey will be all the more rewarding for it.
Unfortunately I can’t make the cleaning go away – that’s something that you might just have to learn to live with – if not love! #weaningmeanscleaning
The Takeaway: Relax!
With hindsight, the time spent worrying about “shoulds” during weaning is waste of time. It doesn’t change the outcome, and rushing through the process means missing out on the joy and experiences that come with it. So, sit back, relax, and let the weaning journey unfold naturally. Your little one will do things in their own time, and when you look back, you’ll wonder what you were worried about!
